In a matter of hours Jake Peavy will take the mound for the San Francisco Giants, hoping to secure them their third World Series victory in five years.
Win or lose it’s possible Peavy may be throwing his final pitches for the Giants who acquired him in a mid-season trade. A free agent to be, Jake Peavy will likely be securing the final large deal of his career and seems to have his eyes set on the Chicago Cubs according to the Sun-Times.
"Peavy didn’t want to talk too much about his pending free agency with a title hanging in the balance, but the former Cy Young winner has the Cubs at the top of his wish list, according to sources close to him."
The Chicago Cubs have been suggested to be the favorites to sign fellow pitcher Jon Lester who Jake Peavy played alongside with the Boston Red Sox. The San Francisco Giants pitcher wouldn’t go as far as to suggest the two were a package deal but did state he’d be thrilled to play with Lester again.
“You never know what free agency brings. I’ve certainly talked to Jon Lester because we’re buddies,” Peavy said. “So I have a feel for what he does. And I certainly know that Chicago would interest him and interest me.”
Playing in the Windy City wouldn’t be completely new to Jake Peavy as he spent a few seasons with the Chicago White Sox and despite the struggles on the field has stated he loved playing in Chicago.
Of course the San Francisco Giants aren’t likely to let Jake Peavy get away that easily as rumors suggest they may offer him a three-year contract given the uneasiness surrounding Matt Cain and Tim Lincecum. Still, if the Chicago Cubs do come calling it appears they’ll have some significant competition.
