Phoenix Suns point guard Isaiah Thomas admits he was interested in signing with the Los Angeles Lakers but they were more focused on Carmelo Anthony.

Although pint-sized point guard Isaiah Thomas signed with the Phoenix Suns this past offseason, he almost didn’t make it to the Valley of the Sun as he had interest in signing with the Los Angeles Lakers.

Thomas revealed such in an interview with Grantland and stated that the interest was mutual. Only problem? Carmelo Anthony.

When free agency broke the Lakers did their best to court the All-Star small forward which seemingly cost them Thomas who was blown away by what the Phoenix Suns were offering,

“First off, it’s the Los Angeles Lakers. Who wouldn’t want to play for them? Second off, I felt like they always needed a point guard — a small guard like myself. I always envisioned myself playing with the Lakers, but like you said, they were waiting on Carmelo and other moves. The Suns came out of nowhere and showed a lot of interest, and I fell in love with them.”

Carmelo Anthony of course ended up spurning the Los Angeles Lakers and eventually re-signed with the New York Knicks.

As for Isaiah Thomas, some questioned if the point guard was the type of player you’d want to invest in given his lack of height. He proved to be a stout offensive threat with the Sacramento Kings but could at times get lost on the defensive end and his height/weight would put the defense into compromised positions.

Still, you can’t teach heart and desire, two things Isaiah Thomas has built his game around.

One thing is for sure – the Los Angeles Lakers could certainly use Isaiah Thomas who looks primed for a huge season with the Phoenix Suns.
