The Minnesota Timberwolves have until Friday at midnight EST time to get a deal done with point guard Ricky Rubio. After they were forced to trade Kevin Love to the
, they surely don’t want to lose Ricky Rubio as well. Although they probably hope Andrew Wiggins will soon become the face of the franchise, for now, it is Ricky Rubio.
Recent reports have indicated that the two are close to a deal but still haven’t been able to iron one out.
“Well, he has until 11pm Central time on Friday to get it done, and I suspect that it’ll come down to the final hours, as is often the case with extensions like this,” writes Chuck Myron of Hoops Rumors. “They seem really far apart financially, but all the reports give me an impression that there’s a sense of camaraderie between Rubio and owner Glen Taylor. I think they’ll meet in the middle somewhere, probably closer to $50MM or so over four years than to the max.”
It wouldn’t be a surprise if the two get something done at the last minute but with Ricky Rubio believing he is worth a max contract and the Timberwolves wanting to give him a deal worth about $48 million over four years (which is what both Kemba Walker and Kyle Lowry received), they will likely have to revisit this discussion in the summer.
Ricky Rubio averaged 9.5 points, 8.6 assists, 4.2 rebounds and 2.3 steals per game and shot 38.1% from the floor, 33.1% from beyond the arc and 80.2% from the free throw line last season. Ricky Rubio has gone for 10.1 points, 8.1 assists, 4.1 rebounds and 2.3 steals per game while shooting 36.8% from the floor, 32.3% from three and 80.1% from the foul line in his three NBA seasons.
