Although Doug Martin has technically played in five games this season for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, that may be in spirit only as the running back has been nothing short of abysmal.

Yes, some of the blame can be placed on the sub par passing attack and less than impressive offensive line but Martin looks like a shell of his former self. Currently averaging just 2.9 yards per carry and holding a season long run of 19-yards in his arsenal, many believe Doug Martin’s time playing for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers could be coming to an end.

Such could be expedited if he’s injured which looks to be the case as he’s reportedly been seen in a walking boot.

As noted above, the Bucs have both Rainey and Sims sitting ready to take over his role which doesn’t sound good for Doug Martin. More importantly, Tampa Bay spent a third-round pick on Sims and looks ready to give him a solid amount of playing time when he comes off the IR. It’s been said they were planning to do such with a healthy Doug Martin, however given his injury that may increase the time Sims sees moving forward.

In terms of Doug Martin’s recovery, that doesn’t appear to be known at this time. It’s possible the team is simply playing it safe and attempting to keep their struggling running back healthy by keeping him out of practice. Or it’s possible the injury is more serious than initially suggested and Martin could be facing time missed.

Certainly won’t hurt the Bucs running game if that’s the case.
