In Game 7 of the World Series, both the Kansas City Royals and San Francisco Giants were forced to go to their bullpens before the end of the 4th inning.

Tim Hudson started Game 7 of the World Series for the Giants. He lasted two innings. Jeremy Guthrie started Game 7 of the World Series for the Royals. He lasted three innings.

Both the Giants and the Royals have weapons in their bullpen. With the “no tomorrow” mentality that comes with a Game 7, both Bruce Bochy and Ned Yost wanted to see their team go out with their best pitchers on the mound in the deciding game. We knew that created the possibility for short hooks for the starting pitchers, but maybe not this short.

Think about it. Neither pitcher made it past the fourth inning.

There was certainly offense in these innings, but nothing out of control. Entering the bottom of the 4th, it was 3-2 in favor of the Giants. The outings were so short, in fact, that Hudson and Guthrie made history.

Jeremy Affeldt, typically a setup man for the Giants, was in this game in the second inning. Kelvin Herrera, normally the 7th inning guy for the Royals, was called upon in the fourth inning. Game 7 is unlike anything else, and both managers are treating it as such with their bullpen usage.
