When LeBron James was a member of the Cleveland Cavaliers as a rookie, he began a tradition in which he walked to the scorers table, dusted his hands with chalk and blew it into the air.
That continued throughout his tenure with the Cavaliers though he eventually stopped doing it when he signed with the Miami Heat.
A few years later LeBron began the famed ‘chalk toss’ though wasn’t sure if he would continue upon his return to the Cleveland Cavaliers.
The NBA star allowed fans to vote on the idea and they overwhelmingly stated he should continue with the tradition which he’ll do on Thursday night in the Cleveland Cavaliers hope opener. Also doing it with LeBron James will be 18,000 of his closet friends as the Cavs are giving away commemorative bags of chalk tonight.

This seems like a cool idea on the surface. I mean, 18,000 people throwing up dust at the same time with James as he returns to his former stomping grounds? Awesome. Except for the fact that everybody is in an enclosed structure and that dust is going to take a while to dissipate.
It’s not as if we haven’t seen teams use pyrotechnics while inside a closed stadium but it’s going to look like a dust bowl in Quicken Loans Arena.
Hopefully they also are giving out a Netti Pot to everybody in attendance considering everybody is going to leave the game with sinus problems.
Still, a unique and rather cool way to incorporate the fans into LeBron James’ regular season homecoming.
