Nintendo is obviously well known for their gaming endeavors, but with their Quality of Life initiative, they are looking to break into the technology space.

Nintendo has long been a power in the gaming circle of technology, but now the company is making a new transition. Recently announced, a new endeavor into fitness will start with a sleep sensor. With the QOL Sensor users will have a way to monitor their sleep patterns and fatigue.

QOL stands for Quality of Life, and has been an initiative that Nintendo has been known to have been working on for quite some time. The line is supposed to bring a handful of product, under the Nintendo name, that don’t have a direct gaming focus. With the newly announced sensor, we have our first look at the ideas coming to life.

The sensor is a standalone device and won’t need any sort of Nintendo console to operate. The features include monitoring breathing, heartbeat, and body movement, without ever touching you. Focused more on reducing sleep than monitoring sleep patterns, it appears Nintendo has a clear goal.

CEO Satoru Iwata told Gamestop, “Since fatigue is not regarded as a disease in the medical world, it is said to be a field where sufficient research has yet to be conducted. We have been fortunate to encounter several experts who have been conducting cutting-edge research in the science of fatigue. Together, we are now developing technology to estimate fatigue.”

Nintendo is following the path of many technology companies in today’s space. Health and fitness tracking is a new wave of must have technology and everyone wants in on it. I’m not sure the Nintendo name carries enough relevance in the space to stick however.

It will be interesting to see what Nintendo is able to do with the technology, and how well the entire Quality of Life suite sticks.
