According to a report by Yahoo Sports’ Adrian Wojnaroski, negotiations between the Minnesota Timberwolves and guard Ricky Rubio are expected to go down to the NBA’s 11 p.m. deadline Friday night.

Recent deals with restricted free-agent point guard could effect negotiations. Earlier in the summer, the Phoenix Suns and Eric Bledsoe agreed to a five-year, $70 million deal.

Just this week the Charlotte Hornets and Kemba Walker agreed to a four-year, $48 million deal. Rubio’s camp will surely be looking at that deal as a bench mark However, many in the NBA blogosphere see Rubio’s ceiling as higher than Walker’s (not that it matters).

According to reports, the Timberwolves are willing to offer Rubio a four-year, $50 million contract. If Minnesota doesn’t re-sign Rubio now, he becomes a restricted free agent after the season.

After failing to extend Kevin Love and trading him to the Cleveland Cavaliers for a package centered around Andrew Wiggins, Rubio becomes some-what of a must-keep guy. He’s the biggest name they have and his flashy play can put butts in seats.

Rubio averaged 6.4 points and 8.6 assists last season but he’s an historically bad shooter. Last season, he shot 38 percent from the field and 33 percent from three-point range.

Keep in mind, the NBA TV deal will effect negotiations now and in the future with the cap expected to take a substantial leap by 2016 or 2017.
