Ricky Rubio has agreed to a four-year, $55 million deal with the Minnesota Timberwolves just before the NBA‘s extension deadline.

The Minnesota Timberwolves have been looking to get an extension done with point guard Ricky Rubio, and they were finally able to do that this evening just before the extension deadline. According to a report from Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports, the deal is worth $55 million-plus over the next four seasons.

Needless to say, this is a very big move for the Timberwolves and it will keep their franchise point guard around alongside of Andrew Wiggins and Zach LaVine to continue the new rebuilding process. He hasn’t been a consistent scorer for the Timberwolves so far in his career, but he has been very clever with the basketball and has been a very good playmaker as well.

Last season with the Timberwolves, Rubio ended up averaging 9.5 points, 8.6 assists, 4.2 rebounds, and 2.3 steals per game. Those numbers show just how much of an impact Rubio can have on the game, but Minnesota will need him to pick up the scoring load this year. So far in two games for the Timberwolves, he has averaged 11.5 points, 7.5 assists, and 6.5 rebounds per game.

There is no denying the “star” potential that Rubio possesses, and perhaps he will find his full potential over the next couple of years. He is in a situation where he is now the leader of the team, and he will be asked to step up and perform as one. It will be a very different season for Minnesota, but hopefully it will spur Rubio on to be more aggressive.

All of that being said, this is a fair deal for both sides and the  Timberwolves needed to keep their point guard around long-term. There are definite areas that need improvement in his game, but he isn’t far away from taking the next step. Improving his offensive game is the next need that he has, but he will have every opportunity to do just that this season.

Expect this deal to work out very well for both sides in the future, and for Rubio to be a key piece in turning the Timberwolves back into playoff contenders in the next few seasons alongside of Andrew Wiggins.
