The Los Angeles Dodgers are expected to tender shortstop Hanley Ramirez the qualifying offer, tying him to MLB draft pick compensation, but the team has yet to say anything publicly.

The Los Angeles Dodgers are expected to extend the $15.3-million qualifying offer to pending free agent shortstop Hanley Ramirez, which would ensure LA draft pick compensation should Ramirez, expected to be one of the most sought-after free agents, sign elsewhere. The move would seem to be obvious, given Ramirez’s offensive talent, but the situation appears to have been clouded by the lack of public comments by the Dodgers themselves.

It’s unlikely Ramirez would accept the one-year qualifying offer (to date, no MLB player has accepted the offer in the two years of existence), but the offer is a crucial procedural move to ensure the Dodgers a relatively high draft pick — and the draft pool money that goes with it — in the MLB Draft next June. It’s not clear if the Dodgers will make a serious attempt at re-signing him.

Ramirez is a true impact bat, even at a time in MLB when elite hitters are few and far between, but he’s had serious durability concerns since the 2010 season, and he’s likely searching for a monster deal, unlikely to be as massive as the deal between the Seattle Mariners and Robinson Cano last offseason, but CBSSports.com’s Jon Heyman speculates it could be somewhere between what outfielders Shin-Soo Choo ($130 million) and Jacoby Ellsbury ($153 million) ended up with last offseason.
