Although the Golden State Warriors locked up Klay Thompson on a long-term contract extension on Friday, the Sacramento Kings wanted one last opportunity to pull off a blockbuster trade for the young guard.
Much of the current Kings ownership group has ties to the Warriors organization and has brought over coaches and/or players (like Carl Landry) from the Warriors.
Since taking over the team last year there have been reports suggesting the front office was interested in trading for Klay Thompson and with his contractual deadline looming, Yahoo Sports says the Kings attempted to make one last trade push for the guard.
Kings made late push to try to acquire Klay Thompson for anyone not named Cousins or Gay, a source said. Might have helped push GS agreement

While you can’t begrudge the Sacramento Kings for making the attempt there’s simply no way they were going to get the deal done without including DeMarcus Cousins. That of course wouldn’t have been a good trade for them so it’s possible they believed Klay Thompson and the Golden State Warriors were not going to agree on a deal and were simply attempting to put themselves in position for a deal if the Warriors decided to move on.
Alas that’s not how it worked out as Golden State signed Thompson to a four-year deal worth around $70 million dollars.
If the Warriors weren’t willing to trade Klay Thompson for Kevin Love, there’s certainly no combination (outside of Cousins) that would have remotely interested in the Warriors. Still, nothing wrong with trying if you’re the Sacramento Kings despite the potential trade having no chance.
