The Miami Marlins will likely be without pitcher Jose Fernandez until June or July. Yikes. One of
brightest young pitchers will be lost for half of next season. Jose Fernandez will be sidelined with injury until June or July, as Jim Bowden reports.
This would be quite a blow to a team that is looking to rebound from a disappointing 2014 season. Before losing National League MVP candidate Giancarlo Stanton on a pitch taken to the face, the Marlins still appeared to be somewhat alive in the wild card race. Then the team went cold and finished the year off with a record of 77-85.
And while they were able to stay competitive late last year, even without their rotational ace, the team will likely look to bolster their starting core in the interim. They probably will need to in order to compete for a playoff spot, as the Giants and Pirates look to defend their positions.
Fernandez has been lights out when he is healthy. A career 2.25 ERA pitcher, Fernandez was 4-2 with a 2.44 mark last season with 70 K in just 50.2 innings pitched. In his rookie season in 2013, he won the NL’s Rookie of the Year award and finished 3rd in the Cy Young voting.
