Losing Kevin Durant was difficult enough, but losing Russell Westbrook too? It’s a nightmare scenario for the Oklahoma City Thunder that has become a reality.
Durant, who is likely to miss a few more weeks at minimum was joined by Westbrook on the sidelines after he broke his hand just days into the season. Also hurting was swingman Reggie Jackson who serves as Durant’s replacement, though thankfully he’s expected to be back on the court soon.
Could he be joined by Ish Smith? The free agent guard had signed a one-year contract with the Houston Rockets though was cut loose recently and the Oklahoma City Thunder quickly called the veteran to speak about a contract.
For what it’s worth Smith and the Thunder have not agreed to any deal and it’s very possible OKC may opt to look elsewhere, though David Alrdige does report they contacted the guard.
"The Thunder have contacted a few veteran point guards like Ish Smith, but no decision on a replacement, if any, has been made yet."
Currently the Oklahoma City Thunder have 14 guaranteed contracts on the books so it’s not known if they’d want to add Smith given his deal will need to be guaranteed also considering 10-day contracts are yet to be available. It’s likely he wouldn’t cost much but every penny counts when you’re a small market team, even if you are a perennial powerhouse like the OKC Thunder.
For now it appears the Thunder are currently still deciding on what to do after losing Russell Westbrook. They may do nothing. They may bring in a veteran guard to deal with the injuries. It appears nobody truly knows their plans at this point.
