After the San Francisco Giants held their third World Series parade in five years, third baseman Pablo Sandoval was asked about his pending free agent status and if he’d like to remain with the organization.
It wasn’t the most definitive answer but Sandoval essentially suggested he’d like to stay with the San Francisco Giants in a perfect world.
Such is a sentiment echoed by the Giants themselves who’ve also suggested they’d like to bring Sandoval back though are apparently willing to let him test the market and become a free agent says Fox Sports.
"But winning the Series greatly compressed the Giants’ timetable, leaving them with only a five-day window of exclusivity to re-sign Sandoval and their other potential free agents. That window expires at 11:59 p.m. ET on Monday. And while the Giants are expected to speak before the deadline with Sandoval’s agent, Gustavo Vasquez, they likely would need to make Sandoval a monster offer to prevent him from hitting the open market."
While it may be a little shocking for a team fresh off a World Series to allow one of their most popular (and talented) players to hit free agency, it’s something the San Francisco Giants have done over the past few years. They’ve yet to lose a major player in their current run who they’ve allowed to become a free agent including Hunter Pence who did the same thing last season.
It’s possible the Giants are hoping the market may set itself for Pablo Sandoval, especially after they extend a one-year qualifying offer to the ‘Panda’.
Such has made signing free agents a bit more difficult as teams have shown somewhat of a reluctancy to give up a high level draft pick in addition to shelling out a massive contract.
