The New York Yankees aren’t likely to bid on any big name free agents given their elevated payroll.

It appears as if the New York Yankees did their shopping last season as the team isn’t expected to get involved in the bidding for big name free agents this offseason.
The Bronx Bombers brought in a handful of high priced names in 2013 including Brian McCann, Jacoby Ellsbury, Masahiro Tanaka and Carlos Beltran who’ve both raised the New York Yankees payroll significantly. Now with their own free agents to worry about it doesn’t sound as if Brian Cashman and company will entertain the idea of signing players like Pablo Sandoval, Jon Lester or Max Scherzer.
"According to a source, the Yankees have no plans to pursue either Scherzer or Lester, the top two free agents on the market this winter. Shields, the third-best free-agent starter, is also off the Bombers’ radar, as is Sandoval, the Giants’ postseason hero who was given a $15.3 million qualifying offer by San Francisco before Monday’s deadline."
New York’s biggest priorities are currently said to be re-signing both third baseman Chase Headley and pitcher Brandon McCarthy, both of whom were acquired before the July trade deadline.
Given their history, it’s a little strange to see the New York Yankees backing out of bidding before the process even begins though it appears even the Bronx Bombers know they need to be careful with handing out massive salaries on a yearly basis.
They’re likely helped out by the fact that many of the potential free agents to be also have looming question marks, like James Shields who has struggled in big games or Pablo Sandoval who doesn’t seem to turn things on until the postseason.
For now it sounds like the New York Yankees are going to be relatively quiet in regards to their free agent plans.
