Although it was known the San Francisco 49ers would start the season without All-Pro linebacker NaVarro Bowman (injury) and fellow defensive star Aldon Smith (suspension), few believed the team would struggle as badly as they have.
Alas the San Francisco 49ers currently sit at 4-4 after two straight losses which has many wondering if they’ve lost their luster.
While 49ers general manager Trent Baalke won’t go that far he does admit there are problems facing the franchise currently.
“There are some things broken. What I mean is, when you’re 4-4 there are certain things you have to do better. The only thing we know how to correct it is to go back to work. You can’t keep doing the same things over and over, can’t keep making the same mistakes over and over.”
Facing an uphill climb to the top of the NFC West standings Baalke knows it’s time to put up or shut up in regards to the San Francisco 49ers attempt to make their fourth consecutive trip to the NFC Championship.
“Right now our backs are against the wall, and when backs are against the wall, you find out a lot about yourself.”
Of course had quarterback Colin Kaepernick not fumbled what would have been a game-winning touchdown on Sunday afternoon the San Francisco 49ers would be sitting at a respectable 5-3 and some of this discussion wouldn’t be taking place.
That’s not what happened however and currently the San Francisco 49ers are playing well below their talent level. Reinforcements are on the way though as Aldon Smith is expected to return in the near future while NaVarro Bowman could return in December.
