Baltimore Ravens Rule Jimmy Smith Out For Season

A big injury loss in the NFL and for the Baltimore Ravens as they lose top cornerback Jimmy Smith after surgery

The Baltimore Ravens announced this afternoon that they lost one of their top players for the season.  Cornerback Jimmy Smith is out for the season after he had surgery on his foot.

Smith missed last Sunday’s 43-23 loss at the Pittsburgh Steelers.  He had injured his foot and initial tests were that it was just a sprain.  As recently as yesterday it was reported he might miss only a few weeks.  After his surgery, doctors determined his season has come to an end.

The loss comes as a bit of a shock given the severity of his injury was not known until testing had been done.  He had 28 tackles and  interceptions for far this season.

Per ProFootballTalk.com, Ravens head coach John Harbaugh said Smith should be ready for their offseason program.

"The plan for Jimmy was to do more testing once swelling subsided. With this exam, doctors decided he needed surgery"

The hit is huge to the Ravens because the depth at the cornerback position is considered thin.  His backup on the Ravens depth chart is rookie Tramain Jacobs.  There is no word where the Ravens will look for help at the corner position.

The 5-4 Ravens have a home game this Sunday against the 2-6 Tennessee Titans.  The Ravens may be over .500 however they sit in fourth-place in what many now consider the best division in football in the AFC North.
