Running back Fred Jackson said he wasn’t sure if he’d be available for the Buffalo Bills in their Week 10 matchup against the Kansas City Chiefs.

The Buffalo Bills have been one of the pleasant surprises in the NFL, winning as many games in the first half of the season as many expected them to win all year. Now at 5-3, the team is hoping to start a playoff push against their peers, the Kansas City Chiefs, who also have five wins and also would love to make the AFC playoffs. The Bills will need running back Fred Jackson if they’re going to make a serious run, and for now it looks like Jackson’s playing status is up in the air for this pivotal AFC matchup set to be played Sunday at Ralph Wilson Stadium.

The good news is that Jackson returned to practice. The bad news is that he won’t commit to playing Week 10 as practice has been a slow go for the team’s top running back.

“It went OK today,” Jackson said, per John Wawrow of the Associated Press. “It was a good action, first time I’ve done anything like that at practice. We’ll see how it goes, doctors are still being doctors and being cautious so I’ve got to see how things progress the rest of the week.”

Jackson is battling to return from a serious groin injury suffered in the team’s win over the Minnesota Vikings. The team also lost CJ Spiller in the same game, and Spiller was placed on the IR designated for a return, which would be Week 16 at the earliest.

If Jackson can’t play, Bryce Brown and Anthony Dixon will share the carries in his absence. Even if he does return to the lineup, expect Buffalo to ease him into the action as groin injuries can be tough for running backs to return from.
