It’s not expected that the New York Yankees will be big spenders this offseason after bringing in multiple big name players last year like Brian McCann, Jacoby Ellsbury, Masahiro Tanka and more. Instead the team has decided to shift their focus to their own free agents like pitcher Brandon McCarthy who the team is more than open to re-signing.
In fact according to Jon Heyman the Yankees have already attempted to get Brandon McCarthy signed on the dotted line though the pitcher, who had a bit of a resurgence with the Bronx Bombers has rebuffed them.
While the free agent markets for pitchers is top heavy, it’s not exactly deep and it seems that McCarthy believes he could stand to cash in once the top pitchers come off the board.
Keep in mind, this isn’t an indication that Brandon McCarthy won’t re-sign with the New York Yankees, just that he’s not going to do it in the immediate future. Understandably that’s not what general manager Brian Cashman wanted to hear but it’s the smart move for McCarthy who’s likely to see an increase in value given the think free agent pool.
McCarthy, who was acquired from the Arizona Diamondbacks was not allowed to throw his cutter with the D’Backs, something he began to use upon his arrival in New York. That single pitched seemed to revert Brandon McCarthy back to his glory days as he posted a very impressive 2.89 ERA in 14 starts for the Yankees. He had a 5.01 ERA in 18 starts for the Diamondbacks.
