Dion Waiters’ future with the Cleveland Cavaliers could be put into question if he isn’t able to modify his game.

When the Cleveland Cavaliers brought in both LeBron James and Kevin Love this past offseason, Dion Waiters seemed to believe his role on the team would not change.

That of course hasn’t been the case as Waiters is averaging far fewer shots now as the fourth (at best) option on offense and has been regulated to more of a sixth man role. That hasn’t sat well with the guard who admitted he’s struggling to find his place on the team.

A player who generally needs the ball in his hands to be at his most effective, Steven Ruiz questions how much longer Dion Waiters will remain with the Cleveland Cavaliers organization.

"Waiters’ future is probably not with the Cavaliers. At just 22, he’s not in rush to win and will not sacrifice his own development (and earning power) for the good of the team. It’s hard to blame a guy still trying to find his place in the league for that mentality."

Ruiz goes on to suggest that Dion Waiters could become an extremely valuable trade piece for the Cleveland Cavaliers if they opt to make such a move down the road.

Clearly in need of a defensive stopper, Waiters seems to be Cleveland’s best tangible asset to make such a deal, especially if he’s paired with the expiring contract of Brendan Haywood. Still, the Cavs aren’t at the point of needing to trade Waiters yet though you have to wonder if he’ll be able to sacrifice himself and his game for the better of the team. If not, it seems as if he could eventually find himself on the trade block.

Looks like each side will have a few months to see how things shake out before the NBA’s trade deadline approaches.
