Los Angeles Dodgers infielder Hanley Ramirez could be a free agent target of the Boston Red Sox.

More from Boston Red Sox

There’s no denying that the Boston Red Sox‘s biggest free agent target (at least from an offensive standpoint) is third baseman Pablo Sandoval. Of course, they’re not the only team with eyes set on Sandoval and the San Francisco Giants are already doing what they can to bring the loveable Panda back to the Bay Area.

If the Red Sox are left at the alter by Pablo Sandoval, what’s their next step? Could there be a potential reunion with Hanley Ramirez of the Los Angeles Dodgers?

Ramirez was of course signed as an amateur free agent by the Boston Red Sox and even appeared in two games for the franchise in 2005 before he was traded to the Miami Marlins. Now it’s possible he could be “Plan B” if the Red Sox whiff on their courting of Sandoval according to the Boston Globe.

"Hanley Ramirez, who this week said he is willing to move from shortstop to third base, could be an option, but his price will also be very high, perhaps higher than Sandoval’s."

When Ramirez is healthy and focused he’s one of the best offensive infielders in the game. Of course staying healthy has proven to be a challenge for Hanley Ramirez, though a move to third base may keep him on the field as he ages.

Still, as noted by the Boston Globe he won’t come cheaply and the Los Angeles Dodgers certainly don’t want to let their All-Star level talent walk for nothing more than a compensatory draft pick. Add in their extremely deep pockets (which are filled to the brim as much as the Red Sox) and you wonder if Hanley Ramirez will leave Southern California.

Regardless, the Boston Red Sox are lurking.
