Although Dion Waiters doesn’t seem to be a big fan of coming off the bench, it’s a role that the young guard will need to grow accustom to. Not only does Cleveland Cavaliers head coach David Blatt want Waiters coming off the bench, so does LeBron James.
Waiters, who has previously expressed frustration off the pine and suggested he was having difficulty adapting to the role has continued to come off the bench given there is little room for him in the starting rotation.
That’s something LeBron James is well aware of as he told the Cleveland Plain Dealer that Waiters needs to accept his new role as it’s in the best interest of the team.
“For the best of the team, that should be Dion’s role,” James said. “Dion comes off the bench and brings us that scoring mentality but more than that, he brings us another defender off the bench, which we need. Someone that’s tough, someone that can guard one through three. It’s a new role, but it’s a good role for him.”
Waiters did start for the entire preseason and continued such for the first three games of the season, though it seemed clear his desire to shoot didn’t exactly jive well with a lineup consisting of James, Kevin Love and Kyrie Irving.
For what it’s worth, Waiters seems to be singing the company tune at the current moment.
“I got to do whatever I got to do for the better of the team,” Waiters said. “If it’s starting, if it’s coming off the bench, if it’s the water boy, I got to do it. Whatever is best for the team.”
Still many wonder if Dion Waiters time with the Cleveland Cavaliers isn’t borrowed as he’s their best trade piece, assuming they were in the market to make a move.
