When Kevin Love was traded to the Cleveland Cavaliers there was talk about a potential handshake contract extension being in the works. That never manifested, understandably so as Kevin Love wanted to wait to see what the new NBA television contract would bring.
He’ll now face a decision at season end – does he opt in to his contract and hope to get a big deal under a new CBA agreement or does he opt out and essentially become the top free agent on the market? Nobody really knows at this point, probably not even Kevin Love himself though Sam Smith of NBA.com hints the All-Star forward is still interested in signing with the Los Angeles Lakers and will consider playing in Southern California at season end.
“LeBron James basically cannot afford to go anywhere after his return to Cleveland. But watch out for Love, “Smith stated. “Indications are he will seriously consider the opt out and has his eyes on a return to Los Angeles, where he attended college and where the Lakers long have had him on their free agent wish list.”
It seems crazy to think that Kevin Love would simply walk away from the Cleveland Cavaliers considering the talent on the roster, though the idea of playing at home seems to be very intriguing to Love who allegedly wanted to be traded to a California-based team before agreeing on a deal to the Cavs.
A Southern California native, it’s clear why Kevin Love would like to play for the Lakers though he’d be leaving a near perfect situation in Cleveland. Still, we’ve seen players do strange things when it comes to free agency so it should be interesting to see what Love does when the time comes.
