On Sunday night the Golden State Warriors, after starting the season 5-0, suffered their first loss of the season.
Golden State played well for the vast majority of the game though looked nothing short of awful come the fourth quarter, allowing 36 points to the Phoenix Suns in the process. That allowed their slim lead at the end of the third quarter to slip away and the Suns knocked Golden State off their perch atop the the league.
So why did the Warriors struggle so bad come the final quarter of play? Well, Stephen Curry had a simple yet rather effective explanation.
Yes, friends, that is a turnover.
Making a play off the delicate and tasty pastry, Stephen Curry had a point as the Golden State Warriors turned the ball over an alarming 26 times. The biggest offender? None other than Stephen Curry himself who technically triple-doubled with 28 points, 10 assists and 10 turnovers.
Of course Curry isn’t the lone Warrior to take some blame for not handling the ball as multiple other players suffered season high numbers in turnovers. Still, nobody even got close to Curry’s total which he was obviously unhappy with (and rightfully so).
Given how often Stephen Curry has the rock in his hands, he’s bound to suffer more turnovers than most and that’s something that has plauged him throughout his career. Still, we’re usually talking a couple per game – not double digits.
The worst part is outside of the turnovers, Stephen Curry had a fantastic game though it’s the lack of focus on keeping the ball that will be the big talk. Phoenix Suns guard Isaiah Thomas should get some credit for his tough defense on Curry as well, often using his long arms to create havoc for the All-Star.
