According to CSN’s own Matt Maiocco, the NFL will officially reinstate Smith today, ending his 9 game suspension for violating the league’s substance abuse and personal conduct policies. He will join a Niners squad that is already ranked 2nd best in yards allowed per game overall (5th in passing, 7th in rushing).
Originally drafted with the 7th overall pick in the 2011 NFL draft by the 49ers, Smith has taken the league by storm since his debut, and with the exception of Houston Texans DE J.J. Watt (45), no one else in the league has garnered more sacks since his debut (42). Smith’s 33.5 sacks through his first two seasons are also an NFL record, and his 27 games to reach a tally of 30 are the fewest in league history.
The San Francisco defensive line is already a formidable enough unit without his presence, but with Smith back in the swing of things, the team can start making a serious push back for the division. They currently trail the Arizona Cardinals by 3 games in the NFC West, and lost the first game of the season series.
