For three seasons Ryan Mallett sat on the New England Patriots bench backing up Tom Brady.
He literally sat on the bench considering he only threw four passes during his three years on the pine before eventually making his way to the Houston Texans. There he found much of the same though that will be changing on Sunday afternoon when Ryan Mallett makes his first NFL start against the Cleveland Browns.
Wanting to give Mallett some words of inspiration, Tom Brady hopped on to his Facebook account and gave some words of encouragement to the young quarterback though more importantly decided to have some fun by trolling him to the masses.
Mallett, performing his rookie duties, was pictured carrying the pads of Tom Brady during practice – something Brady himself had to do to earn his stripes when he backed up Drew Bledsoe.
Brady posted the following caption along with the above photo:
"#tbt to Ryan Mallett carrying Brian Hoyer’s and my pads after practice his rookie season.Times have changed! Good luck this weekend, guys! #muchdeserved"
It has to be pretty surreal for Tom Brady to watch a player who he spent nearly every day with for four seasons finally getting a chance in the NFL. You know the two shared plenty of long afternoons and evenings in the video room with Mallett doing everything he could to soak up any knowledge Brady would unearth.
Many believed Ryan Mallett would be a first-round pick coming out of school though he dropped to the third-round before the Patriots decided to take a chance on the signal caller.
Hopefully he was paying attention as there aren’t many quarterbacks with more savvy knowledge than that of Tom Brady.
