Johnny Manziel: Houston Texans Considered Drafting Me No. 1 Overall
Johnny Manziel will have an opportunity to see what could have been when the Houston Texans and Cleveland Browns play this weekend in a game that could have seen the Browns backup quarterback starting for the Texans this weekend
The Houston Texans were owners of the No. 1 pick in the 2014 NFL Draft and were contemplating drafting 2012 Heisman winner and former Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel before ultimately drafting Jadeveon Clowney and Manziel hopes he’ll get an opportunity to show the Texans how much they’ll regret that decision.

“From what I was told, I was in the top range of picks that they were looking at and considering with the top spot, ” Manziel tells Brian Smith of the Houston Chronicle.
Manziel ended up sliding down to the No. 22 spot after the Browns traded up to take him with the hopes he could be the team’s franchise quarterback they’ve lacked for what seems like forever, but has taken a back seat to Brian Hoyer who could lead the team to the AFC North title.
Meanwhile, Manziel and the Texans are left to wonder what if.
The Texans are starting Ryan Mallett on Saturday after he replaced the ineffective Ryan Fitzpatrick, but what if Bill O’Brien pressed for the Texans to draft Manziel instead of Clowney who has been in and out of the lineup with injury and illness and has been invisible this year.
Does Manziel hold that decision against the Texans?
“I sit there — obviously I feel like I’m going to have a chip on my shoulder [for] any team that passed [on] me, not just the Texans. But I think when my time comes and I get a chance to play and show really what I’m made of in this league, hopefully I do make some people regret not taking me.”
When that opportunity to make teams regret passing on him in the draft happens remains to be seen and as long as the Texans experience issues at quarterback there will be those speculating about their decision to pass on the local star.
