Indianapolis Colts wide receiver Reggie Wayne praises the New England Patriots secondary by calling them the best he’s played against.

Reggie Wayne would know. The long-tenured Colts wideout has played against all three Patriots defenses that won Super Bowls and is old enough to remember when the two teams were in the same division.

The 14-year veteran explained his reasoning in a story by Mark Daniels for the Providence Journal:

"“This secondary here, in my 14 years playing New England, is probably the best complete secondary,” Wayne said on Wednesday. “I think it allows them to do more things up front with their front seven games, that they probably haven’t done in the past years. They’re talented. They’re ball-hungry. It gives them a little bit of where they can be risk-takers with blitzes and things of that nature.”"

There’s no doubt that the Patriots have some pretty talented defensive backs this season. Darrelle Revis has probably lost a step, but he’s still better than the average cornerback. Then there’s the bruising physicality of former Seattle Seahawks cornerback Brandon Browner playing man coverage. Add to that slot corner Kyle Arrington and safety Patrick Chung, who is suddenly having one of his better seasons.

If it seems familiar, it should be. The strong Patriots secondary is opening things up for the defensive line and allowing for more complexity. Rather like the 2013 Seattle Seahawks defense.

Nevertheless, the Patriots’ revamped secondary will have its work cut out for them against the high-flying Colts offense. Not only do they lead the league in points per game, but they are on pace for racking up the third most yards in NFL history. While Reggie Wayne could be facing the best Patriots’ defense in his career, Patriots coach Bill Belichick could be facing the best Colts offense he’s seen.
