If the Los Angeles Dodgers are to retain shortstop Hanley Ramirez this offseason, it’s going to cost them as the infielder continues to draw a significant amount of free agent interest.
There have already been rumors suggesting the Boston Red Sox could target their former prospect and now a fellow American League East team is also showing interest as the Toronto Blue Jays have established contact with the veteran.
Ramirez is expected to draw a hefty salary no matter where he signs and could be out of the price range of Toronto though they still may attempt to get into the bidding process eventually, though for now have done nothing more than make their presence known.
The fact they’re not “actively” pursing Hanley Ramirez likely suggests they either have a target with more importance or they’re waiting to see the market set itself. That will likely take Pablo Sandoval, the biggest offensive free agent signing first.
One thing that could sway Hanley Ramirez’s free agent destination could be the position he plays defensively as the Los Angeles Dodgers are said to have interest in moving him to third base. It’s a position Hanley Ramirez has stated he’s open to playing however has said he doesn’t want to switch back-and-forth.
For now it appears as if the Toronto Blue Jays are just testing the waters though they could become a player for the veteran if fellow teams interested in the shortstop go different ways.
Regardless, whomever puts in a bid on HanRam will be taking a significant risk given his injury woes.
