NFL’s Concussion Solution? Magnets

The National Football League could be experimenting with magnetized helmets relatively soon.

Apparently the NFL could be experimenting with magnetized helmets soon, or at least that is the collective feeling people are likely getting from reading about this. Perfectly understandable from an outsider’s perspective. The National Football League may very well start using magnets in players’ helmets.

The goal of this would be to reduce to impact of head to head collisions by cutting down on the net force exhibited during such ordeals. This, in turn, would likely result in a significantly lower rate of concussions. However, there are a few things that will be needed to take into account.

Should the NFL go forward with this rumored program, it would need to review the safety and potential health risks of placing magnets essentially right next to the brains of their athletes. Would there be any hazardous long term effects to this kind of exposure?

The league would also need to conduct a series of tests with the intent on finding out just how much force would be appropriate to provide a proper cushion from impact. Magnets with weaker polarization would likely provide negligible support, while too much could present an entirely new issue; strain on the necks on players.

Perhaps the most important thing to note here is that the league seems to be attempting to curtail one of its biggest issues directly, even if the idea would appear to be far-fetched at first glance.
