A new YouTube video explains some of the missteps by ringside officials and team trainers in connection to the death of amateur kickboxer Dennis Munson Jr. back in March.

It was the first fight, amateur or pro, in the career of Dennis Munson Jr. Training out of Roufusport in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the kickboxer was scheduled to fight at the legendary Eagles Club. Things unfortunately took a turn for the worst, and Munson Jr. died of his injuries incurred in the bout.

Below is the video, as mentioned previously. It features audio from experts with knowledge of medicine and the brutal nature of combat sports. As a bit of warning, it is difficult to watch. Recently, fellow fighters have been outspoken against the measures, or lack thereof, taken to prevent this tragedy from occurring. UFC strawweight competitor Rose Namajunas had formerly trained at Roufusport, and was especially critical of what happened back in March. She wrote the following on her Instagram account, accompanied by a picture of Munson in between rounds, just hours before his death.

“Such a tragedy from my hometown that could’ve been avoided. Cornermen should never be putting their hands on their fighters pressuring them to fight like seen in the video. Sad thing is I’ve experienced first hand these coaches not so friendly demeanor in the past. But you put up with it because you believe in your coach to guide you in becoming a champion.”

Combat sports can promote a healthy competitive attitude. However, while fostering that mentality can provide for a healthy lifestyle, the risks are still quite present. More than anything, fighters should be able to rely on their coaches to give them guidance on when enough is enough. There are many that do. Unfortunately, for Munson Jr., this was not the case.
