Red Sox Make Offer To Free Agent SP Jon Lester

MLB free agent starting pitcher Jon Lester has reportedly received an offer from his former team, the Boston Red Sox.

According to ESPN’s own Gordon Edes, the Boston Red Sox have made an offer to free agent SP Jon Lester. Boston is trying to bounce back from a rough 2014. Who can blame them? They went from the cellar of the AL East in 2012, to first place with a World Series title in 2013, and then right back into last within the division this past season.

The “worst to first to worst” pattern is likely not sitting well with those associated with the team. Although a championship is nice, the team would probably stand to benefit from a lot more consistency. One thing that can certainly help them back up that road is pitching. Thus, this potential acquisition makes quite a bit of sense.

Lester had been the anchor of the Red Sox pitching rotation for years up until his trade to the Oakland Athletics back on the July 31st trade deadline. During his time with the club, he went 110-63, winning 2 World Series Championships in 2007 and 2013. He made 3 all star teams; 2010, 2011, and 2014. The soon to be 31 year old left handed pitcher is expected to get an offer somewhere in the range of $130-150 million over a 6 year minimum. Earlier this year, he rejected the team’s offer of 4 years and $70 million. After that, Lester refused to continue negotiations for the duration of the season.

It will be very interesting to see what happens. The Red Sox have been clear about their intentions to lure away 28 year old Pablo Sandoval from the San Francisco Giants this off-season. Should they succeed in landing both players, it will likely cost the team over $200 million in total contract money. Lester has already met with the Chicago Cubs as of yesterday, and plans to visit the Atlanta Braves tomorrow. Other teams currently lining up for Lester’s services include the New York Yankees, St. Louis Cardinals, and Toronto Blue Jays.
