You may not know Paul Sturgess may name, but there’s a pretty good chance you’ve seen the 7’8 center during your travels on the internet.
Sturgess, who made his mark with the Harlem Globetrotters has moved on and signed with the Cheshire Phoenix of the British Basketball League.
Many have seen Paul Sturgess’ trademark move which is a no-jump dunk featuring the big man doing exactly as that says, dunking without even leaving the basketball court. Of course, as we’ve seen so often before, size doesn’t always equate talent and Sturgess just isn’t quick enough to play in the NBA which is why he’s currently playing abroad.
Still, playing in Europe should be a good move for Paul Sturgess as his absurdly large frame will benefit him well in a relatively sparse league.
A native of England, Sturgess says he’s happy to be home.
“I have been enjoying my time back at home in England and for the chance to play in the BBL whilst I am here is something I will relish. I am excited to join my new teammates and hope to fulfill whatever role is given to me!”
Not exactly a force on the offensive side of the ball, Sturgess will make his money in the paint where he’ll block shots with a reckless abandonment. More than just blocking opponents into oblivion however, Paul Sturgess will be able to use his massive size to alter the shots of the opposition which is probably just as important (if not more) in comparison to his ability to block shots.
More of a circus addition than actual basketball talent, there’s no denying that the 7’8 center will help put people in the seats. Hopefully he’ll be able to put up some nice numbers on the floor too proving he’s more than just a spectacle but also a basketball player as well.
