For the most part, the NBA has kept a pretty clean image over the past few decades once former commissioner David Stern cleaned up the rampant cocaine abuse. Yes, it’s well known that marijuana has become popular in the league but there hasn’t been much in regards to legal troubles.
That changed recently when Charlotte Hornets forward Jeff Taylor was arrested in September following charges of domestic abuse.
Taylor plead guilty to such in which it was said he shoved a woman he was staying with in an East Lansing, MI hotel room which resulted in the woman sustaining injuries to her arm and head.
The incident came around the same time the NFL was dealing with a rash of domestic violence issues of their own which has prompted the NBA to strike hard on Taylor, who received 18 months probation after pleading guilty.
Now the Charlotte Hornets forward will miss the next 24-games after he was suspended by commissioner Adam Silver.
“While the suspension is significantly longer than prior suspensions for incidents of domestic violence by NBA players, it is appropriate in light of Mr. Taylor’s conduct, the need to deter similar conduct going forward, and the evolving social consensus — with which we fully concur — that professional sports leagues like the NBA must respond to such incidents in a more rigorous way,” said Silver.
Given everything surrounding Jeff Taylor the Charlotte Hornets opted not to play their forward this season though the games missed will be included in his suspension. Given that Taylor, barring any team suspension, will be allowed to return to the court on December 17th against the Phoenix Suns.
