The Edmonton Oilers put themselves on the penalty kill for nearly twenty seconds

OH, THOSE OILERS.

It’s one thing to have too many men on the ice, particularly during a shift change/when you’re down by a goal and aren’t paying attention. It happens.

I can honestly say, though, that this is the first time I’ve ever seen a team put themselves on the penalty kill — for the entirety of a shift, nonetheless — and not even notice it.

Is this bad coaching, bad playing, or just a bad team overall?

There are a number of things wrong here. First, the Oilers are down 4-3 at this point; how did they not notice that they were down a man when they’re trying to score? They were also hovering around Ben Scrivens the entire time they were on this self-imposed penalty kill… you could actually count them being a man short while watching the Canucks attempt to score again.

Finally, after about twenty seconds, it looked like Steven Pinizzotto figured out what was going on and hopped into the play.

Any team could make a mistake like that… but you don’t often see it being made for a full twenty seconds. This might be why the Oilers are at the bottom of the Pacific, only ahead of the Columbus Blue Jackets and the Buffalo Sabres.
