If you blinked you may have missed it, but during a third quarter drive for the Florida State Seminoles, quarterback Jameis Winston became entangled with a referee on Saturday night which at the time didn’t seem to be that big of a deal.
No penalty was called and the announce team laughed at the physical exchange between Winston and the referee.
However soon after the game controversy began to surround Jameis Winston (as it always does) and the signal caller was feeling the heat for shoving the referee out of the way.
Many assumed it was simply a case of being in the wrong place at the wrong time and the referee was attempting to get himself out of the way. That wasn’t the case though as it was clear the ref was attempting to keep Jameis Winston from hiking the ball in effort to allow both sides to make player substitutions.
Winston wanted nothing to do with that as he and his Seminoles were running a uptempo offense and wanted to catch Boston College by surprise in what was a deadlocked 17-17 score at the time.
Jameis Winston explained the play and stated the obvious – there were substitutions taking place and he understood the referee was attempting to stop him from hiking the ball.
“He was just holding me because he said we had a substitution. It was actually a fast-tempo play, so I was trying to get up under there and let it ride.”
If he knew what he was doing, why the push? Did he feel the referee was simply taking too long and should have moved himself out of the way beforehand? There was obviously no malicious intent on the part of Jameis Winston and he wasn’t trying to do anything other than play football, though by the rulebook he did go across the line.
