Pablo Sandoval has decided to sign with the Boston Red Sox, spurning the San Francisco Giants in free agency.

It’s been an expensive afternoon in Beantown as not only have the Boston Red Sox signed shortstop Hanley Ramirez but they’ve also nabbed Pablo Sandoval.

That’s the word from ESPN who says the two have come to an agreement though has yet to release terms of the deal currently.

Sandoval was drawing heavy interest from both the San Diego Padres and San Francisco Giants (his previous team) though it appears the lure of playing at Fenway Park was too great for Sandoval.

The San Francisco Giants were thought to be the only other serious suitor for Sandoval and had not provided the third baseman with a ‘final’ offer according to reports on Sunday night. However perhaps Sandoval wasn’t interested in waiting or simply didn’t like what San Francisco was offering which lead to his departure from the Bay Area.

Pablo Sandoval has spent his entire career with the Giants up until this point though was somewhat polarizing due to his penchant for injury and mild struggles during the regular season. Of course when the postseason rolled around, Sandoval seemingly hit a switch as he’s become one of the best playoff hitters in MLB history and of course hit three home runs in a single game during the 2012 World Series.

A native of Venezuela, Sandoval was a fan favorite in San Francisco where he was routinely referred to as the ‘Panda’, a nickname bestowed upon him by former teammate Barry Zito.

For what it’s worth, Sandoval’s agent is currently denying the move is official.
