Manuel declined the offer, as well as others from several additional AL East teams. The 70 year old Manuel won a World Series Championship with the Phillies in 2008, as part of a run with the team that saw him win 5 consecutive NL East division titles from 2007-2011. His team also won the NL pennant in 2009, but ultimately lost to the New York Yankees in 6 games in the World Series. He finished runner up in the NL Manager of the Year award voting in 2007 and 2008. Including his 3 year stint at the helm of the Cleveland Indians, Manuel is 1,000-826 in 12 seasons as an MLB manager.
Manuel has always been one of the more offensive minded managers in the game, as evidenced be a three year stretch from 2006-2008 when 1B Ryan Howard won the 06 MVP, SS Jimmy Rollins took home the honors in 07, and the former finished runner up to then St. Louis Cardinals 1B Albert Pujols for the 08 hardware. Thus, interest in him within this capacity is completely understandable.
