Baltimore got on the board first in the opening quarter via a 15-yard Joe Flacco pass to wide receiver Steve Smith. The veteran wide out had a big night, catching four passes for 89 yards and the score.
New Orleans responded toe Smith’s score in the first, thanks to a 10-yard strike from quarterback Drew Brees to tight end Jimmy Graham.
Baltimore opened up the second-quarter scoring on a 13-yard rush from Justin Forsett. The Ravens’ rushing game was dominant all night, as they pounded New Orleans for 216 yards on the ground. Forsett was particularly excellent, adding 182 of those yards.
However, the Saints scored on their next drive with a Shayne Graham field goal and then added seven more points with 17 seconds left before the break (26 yard-pass from Brees to Marques Colston) that gave New Orleans a 17-14 lead heading into the break.
But it wouldn’t take long for the Ravens to reclaim the lead. A Justin Tucker field goal with 8:30 left in the third followed by a Will Hill interception return for a touchdown with 4:59 in the quarter put Baltimore up 24-17.
The teams then swapped field goals in the fourth quarter before Forsett put a huge dent in New Orleans’ chances with a 20-yard rush with 2:59 left in the game.
Brees and Graham connected on another score (two yards) to make it a one-score game with 40 seconds left, but it wasn’t enough as Baltimore hung on.
Next Sunday, the Ravens will play at home against the San Diego Chargers while the Saints will play the Pittsburgh Steelers on the road.
