Billy Butler signed with the Oakland Athletics as a free agent this off-season after 10 seasons with the Kansas City Royals. This week he took out an ad to thank Kansas City’s fans.
It’s going to be a strange visual indeed to see the man known as ‘Country Breakfast’ in a uniform other than the blue and white of the Kansas City Royals.

Billy Butler played for the Royals from 2004 to 2014, ending with this past season’s run to the World Series. The team declined his hefty $12.5 million option for 2015 this off-season, making Butler a free agent. Both sides expressed interest in keeping Butler with the Royals, but the A’s quickly swooped in to snag the DH away.
Having officially signed in Oakland for three years and $30 million, Butler took out a full-page newspaper ad this week to thank Royals’ fans for their support over the years. The ad appeared in the Kansas City Star:
I’m sure Royals’ fans appreciate this gesture, almost as much as they appreciate the fact that their team wasn’t the one to pay Billy Butler $30 million for three seasons.
