On Friday night whispers of a potential Jeff Samardzija trade surfaced, though that noise was quickly downplayed and the Oakland A’s decided to trade third baseman Josh Donaldson in a blockbuster deal.
Of course that doesn’t mean that Samardzija isn’t on the table as the pitcher has been the subject of trade rumors for quite some time and now it’s the Chicago White Sox who are showing interest in the ace arm.
That’s the word from the Sun Times who says the Chicago White Sox and Oakland A’s are talking about a potential Jeff Samardzija trade.
"That said, sources confirmed the Sox are in discussions involving Samardzija, with one speculating they are past the “just talking” stage.“I believe serious talks are going on,” an American League source said."
It’s not known who the Oakland A’s would be targeting though there is some speculation suggesting that Alexi Ramirez could be a potential candidate to head back to the Bay Area if such deal is struck. For now though it doesn’t appear that any trade is imminent but rather the two sides are just speaking in effort to find a workable deal.
Of course the Chicago White Sox aren’t going to be the only team with interest in trading for Jeff Samardzija so it’s doubtful the Oakland A’s will be pressured into a deal. Given that it might be best for the White Sox to strike while the iron is hot before other teams put their feet in the water (assuming they haven’t already done so).
Samardzija is of course extremely familiar with pitching in Chicago as he spent the first seven season of his career with the Cubs.
The 29-year-old finished last season with a 2.99 ERA and and 202 strikeouts.
