When Derek Fisher took over the head coaching job for the New York Knicks this past offseason, most knew it would be a struggle. Fisher himself likely knew times would be hard as well though probably didn’t envision things going this bad so soon.
Alas that’s exactly what has happened as the New York Knicks look like one of the worst teams in the NBA again and now he’s taking shots from Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban.
As you may recall, Derek Fisher played with the Mavericks for nine games during the 2012-13 season but suffered a knee injury.
Believing he had played his last game, Fisher asked Cuban and the Dallas Mavericks to release him so he could go recover and be with his family. That’s exactly what the Mavs did though not long after Fisher decided to sign with the Oklahoma City Thunder in effort to chase a ring.
Understandably that left Cuban a bit salty and he let his feelings be known when he spoke about Fisher and the New York Knicks’ struggles recently.
“I’m more concerned with his health and welfare. I know how hard it is for him to fly and travel and be away,” Cuban said.
It was an obvious verbal smack towards Derek Fisher though Mark Cuban isn’t exactly one to hold his tongue if he feels he’s been wronged. It doesn’t appear as if the relationship between the two is unrepairable but there’s no denying a bit of animosity on the part of Cuban and it’s hard to blame him.
He allowed Fisher to leave the team per his request and was only left with egg on his face after Fisher joined the Thunder.
