The Edmonton Oilers have yet to do anything two full months into the 2014-2015 NHL season

If I told you that Don Cherry demanded the Edmonton Oilers get rid of someone immediately, would you be surprised?

Me neither.

Now, how about if I told you that he said that a full month ago?

The Edmonton Oilers are, officially, the worst team in the NHL. They’ve even taken over from the Buffalo Sabres — who began their rebuild a good five years after Edmonton, and are nowhere near finished with it yet. The only team with fewer points than the Oilers is the Columbus Blue Jackets, who spent nearly an entire month short nine significant roster players… and they’re only a game away from surpassing Dallas Eakins’ team, as well.

Not many teams would have been desperate to make a swap with Edmonton at the start of the season, but they’re running out of time. Teams like the Arizona Coyotes and the San Jose Sharks are looking for a little extra push to get back on track; a guy like Jordan Eberle or even the iconic Taylor Hall could easily right one of these franchises, and would almost certainly send some help Edmonton’s way.

So… if a trade is more than plausible at this point, why haven’t the Edmonton Oilers done anything STILL?

At this point, many are pointing fingers at the administration — and most rightfully so. The majority of the team’s brass, though, are old linemates and teammates and Stanley Cup-mates; it’s going to be hard to make a real change in Edmonton if these guys are the real problem.

For now, though, the only move the team has made all season has been to fire the goaltending consultant… and if that’s the only move they plan to make all season, it’s going to be a very long year north of the 49th parallel.
