Apparently if you’re an All-Star caliber player and are available, the Boston Red Sox are going to do what they can to sign/trade for you.
Boston has already brought in infielders Pablo Sandoval and Hanley Ramirez. They’ve also been linked in free agency to former pitcher and ace arm Jon Lester. Now they’re apparently attempting to enter the bidding on Oakland A’s starter Jeff Samardzija who has found his name swirling in trade rumors yet again.
Noise has suggested the A’s are likely to trade their arm and now it’s essentially become a bidding war for the pitcher.
While many are likely to attempt a trade for the young arm, few have the assets of the Boston Red Sox who are showing interest according to the Boston Globe.
"Numerous teams are trying to obtain the righthander, including the Red Sox, according to a team source. Samardzija is 29 and can become a free agent in 2016. GM Billy Beane is fielding offers as he is in a trade frenzy trying to re-create his contending team. The Red Sox have all the pieces Beane would want, including young pitching and middle infielders."
The Boston Red Sox have a formidable lineup so it appears their biggest weakness currently in pitching, especially in the starting rotation. Considering they don’t have a ton of space for their high-level prospects on the MLB roster, you can’t help but think the Red Sox are likely one of the favorites to land Jeff Samardzija in a trade.
They of course will have plenty of competition for his services though few can give up the type of talent the Red Sox possess in their minor league system.
Should be an interesting few weeks.
