Umenyiora has certainly slowed down in recent seasons. So far in 2014 he has 11 tackles and 2.5 sacks. At 33 years old, Umenyiora might still have a couple decent seasons in the tank, but he seems to be at peace with this decision given the timing of his announcement.
It probably does not help Umenyiora’s motivation to play beyond this season that he is currently a member of the depressing unit that is the Atlanta Falcons’ defense.
The veteran defensive lineman announced that this will be his final season during Troy’s game this past weekend.
Umenyiora played a number of quality seasons in the league, including impact seasons on two New York Giants’ Super Bowl champion teams. From 2003 to 2012 he played for those Giants, recording 75 sacks during those seasons. He had a quality 7.5 sacks for the Falcons last year in 16 games of action.
Osi Umenyiora was originally a 2nd round pick out of Troy, 12 seasons ago.
