The Atlanta Falcons’ new stadium will not be cheap by any stretch of the imagination, as updated estimates now project a cost of $1.4 billion once it is finished.

Suppose you had $1.4 billion. What would you buy?

Well, if building a new stadium for the Atlanta Falcons was high on your list, get ready to go broke. According to new estimates, the Falcons’ new home will take every penny of that $1.4 billion, as a second $200 million bump will make the stadium — slated to open in 2017 — to an even higher total.

The Falcons originally projected stadium costs to be in the neighborhood of $1.2 billion. Based in downtown Atlanta, the stadium will have a retractable roof along with the perks that will go with building the latest state of the art home for a franchise that has just one Super Bowl visit and three NFC championship appearances since joining the League in 1966.

Sure, AT&T Stadium cost more than a pretty penny and is residence for a team that has done little since 1995, but the Dallas Cowboys can take comfort with their five Super Bowl titles, a host of Hall of Fame players and an owner who goes all out to make sure his team is a topic of discussion, win or lose.

The potential windfall from saying farewell to the Georgia Dome could pay dividends before the Falcons play their first game in the new stadium. Pro Bowl wide receiver Julio Jones could become an unrestricted free agent after the 2015 season, and the money owner Arthur Blank is expecting from his new home will give him more flexibility when it comes to retaining one of the game’s premier players.
