The Minnesota Twins are showing interest in Edinson Volquez, who started the National League Wild Card game for the Pittsburgh Pirates.

In what seems to be a never-ending search for veteran arms, the Minnesota Twins have reportedly turned their attention to free agent hurler Edinson Volquez, who pitched for the Pittsburgh Pirates last season.

Volquez finished 13-7 with a 3.04 ERA in 32 appearances (31 starts) for the Pirates and made the start for Pittsburgh in the National League Wild Card round, taking the loss against the eventual World Series champion San Francisco Giants. Volquez had his best season since going 17-6 with the Cincinnati Reds in 2008.

The Twins are also reportedly in contact with the agent for both pitchers Brett Anderson and Francisco Liriano along with meeting with the agent for Justin Masterson when the winter meetings commence in San Diego next week.

Liriano was part of the Pirates’ rotation with Volquez this past season, going 7-10 despite a 3.38 ERA. Liriano also led the team with 175 strikeouts and held opponents to just a .218 batting average.

Bringing back Liriano would be a reunion for both him and the Twins, who Liriano pitched from 2005-20012, where he recorded 50 of his 76 career wins. He had a breakout season in 2006 when he went 12-3 with a 2.16 ERA, but had the bulk of his time in Minnesota curtailed with a variety of injuries. He was dealt to the Chicago White Sox during the 2012 campaign before signing with the Pirates as a free agent in 2013.

Obviously, the Pirates will be following closely, as the thought of losing tw0-fifths of their 2014 starting rotation will be cause for concern in the Steel City.
