It’s safe to say that Mark Cuban is a bit of a homer when it comes to the Dallas Mavericks and the players on his roster.
There is of course nothing wrong with that and anybody in his shoes would likely follow a similar path. Still, there can be times when Mark Cuban gets a little too crazy regarding comments about players on his roster, like a recent suggestion that Monta Ellis is more worthy of an MVP trophy than Allen Iverson was in 2001 when he won the NBA MVP award.
While Mark Cuban was simply attempting to bring up how well Monta Ellis has been playing, it’s the reputation of the guard which will continue to haunt him moving forward no matter how well he plays for the Dallas Mavericks.
Simply put, most remember Monta Ellis from his days with the Golden State Warriors where he didn’t have much talent surrounding him until his final season or so in the Bay Area. Given that he was often a bit of a stat machine though wasn’t overly efficient in doing so and most felt he was a prototypical volume scorer.
Such has changed during his short stint with the Dallas Mavericks thanks to the immense talent around him, though he’s not on the same level as Allen Iverson.
Mark Cuban’s point is certainly understood though there are likely better comparisons out there since many will likely laugh at the comparison.
