On Friday, the official ball that will be used in the 2015 Women’s World Cup this summer in Canada was revealed.

The 2015 Women’s World Cup Tournament will begin on June 6. A day before the final drawing for the group stages, the official ball that will be used throughout the tournament has been revealed.

Like the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, ADIDAS is again the designer of the official ball. It looks a bit similar to the “Brazuca’ used in the 2014 Men’s World Cup this past summer in Brazil. The colorful and wavy lines on the ball are reminiscent of the “Brazuca’, but it is a bit cleaner looking. It also, obviously, has the official 2015 Women’s World Cup logo on the ball; the multicolored maple leaf.

The ball not only looks similar to the ‘Brazuca,’ but is designed similarly as well.  It features six interlocking panels to increase in flight speed, while at the same time keeping its roundness.  It is also thermally bonded so that it will stay consistent in rainy and wet conditions.  There are hundreds of small dimples all along the ball, sort of what you would find on a basketball.  These dimples are the not only decrease the drag of the ball, but the increase the players grip on the ball.

This will be the first World Cup where 24 teams will qualify for the tournament, as opposed to the usual 16 teams.  FIFA is expanding the size of the tournament in an attempt to help grow not only the sport of soccer, but women’s soccer in general.
