The 14th season for Reggie Wayne may be his final one in the NFL as the Colts receiver tells Mike Chappell of RTV6 in Indianapolis that it could be time to walk away from the game.
“Thirty-six, man. Kids growing up,” Wayne explained to Mike Chappell of RTV6 in Indianapolis. “It’s time for family decisions.”
This is the first time we have head the 36-year-old receiver mention the possibility that this could be his last and his desire to spend more time with his three children is one of a number of factors that goes into a decision like this.
“It’s real, man,” he said of possibly retiring. “It’s tough, it really is. You have to decide if you want to make that sacrifice again. A lot goes into it.”
Wayne will be a free agent at the end of the season and his decision to retire could be made for him if the Colts don’t elect to bring back the receiver who was the team’s first round pick out of Miami in the 2001 draft.
“I know what I’m not going to do is go somewhere else and play for one year, two years. Absolutely not. Nobody else. I don’t have time to be dipping and dabbing, one year here, maybe one year somewhere else.”
Wayne came back this year after tearing his ACL in the seventh game last year and his production has diminished this year. Wayne is averaging 57.8 yards per game this year, which would be the lowest mark he’s had since 2003 when he averaged 52.4 yards per game.
He has eight, 1,000 yard seasons and made six Pro Bowl teams during his career. His 14,202 receiving yards are the most of any active player and rank eighth in NFL history and his 1,060 receptions rank seventh all-time, so his countdown to Canton could be underway once the Colts season comes to a close.
